Introduction:
In this article, we delve into the profound meanings encapsulated within a series of sacred verses from the Shri Rudrayamala Tantra. These verses, known as the Shri Batuk Bhairav Brahmakavacham, offer spiritual seekers a potent mantra and protective shield. Translated from Sanskrit to English, each verse unfolds layers of wisdom, guiding one through spiritual contemplation and practice. Before Starting - Why Understanding is Important here
"इदं कवचमज्ञात्वा यो जपेद्बटुकं नरः । न चाप्नोति फलं तस्य परं नरकमाप्नुयात् ॥"
- "Having not understood this armor (kavacha), if a person chants the Batuka mantra, he does not attain its ultimate fruit and may fall into hell."
Translation
Invocations
॥ श्रीगणेशाय नमः ॥
Salutations to Lord Ganesha.
॥ श्रीउमामहेश्वराभ्यां नमः ॥
Salutations to Uma (Parvati) and Maheshwara (Shiva).
॥ श्रीगुरवे नमः ॥
Salutations to the Guru.
॥ श्रीभैरवाय नमः ॥

Dialogue between Devi and Maheshwara
श्रीदेव्युवाच।
भगवन्सर्ववेत्ता त्वं देवानां प्रीतिदायकम्।
भैरवं कवचं ब्रूहि यदि चास्ति कृपा मयि॥ १॥
Shri Devi said:
"O Lord, you are the knower of all and the giver of delight to the gods.
Tell me the Bhairava Kavach if you have compassion for me."
प्राणत्यागं करिष्यामि यदि नो कथयिष्यसि।
सत्यं सत्यं पुनः सत्यं सत्यमेव न संशयः॥ २॥
"I will give up my life if you do not tell me.
Truth, truth, again truth, it is indeed the truth without any doubt."
इत्थं देव्या वचः श्रुत्वा प्रहस्यातिशयं प्रभुः।
उवाच वचनं तत्र देवदेवो महेश्वरः॥ ३॥
Hearing these words of Devi,
The Lord of Lords, Maheshwara, smiled greatly and spoke.
ईश्वर उवाच।
बाटुकं कवचं दिव्यं शृणु मत्प्राणवल्लभे।
चण्डिकातन्त्रसर्वस्वं बटुकस्य विशेषतः॥ ४॥
Ishwara said:
"My beloved, listen to the divine Kavach of Batuka.
It is the essence of the Chandika Tantra, especially of Batuka."
तत्र मन्त्राद्यक्षरं तु वासुदेवस्वरूपकम्।
शङ्खवर्णद्वयो ब्रह्मा बटुकश्चन्द्रशेखरः॥ ५॥
"In that, the first letter of the mantra represents the form of Vasudeva.
The color of a conch represents Brahma, and Batuka is Chandrashekhara (the one who holds the moon on his head)."
आपदुद्धारणो देवो भैरवः परिकीर्तितः।
प्रवक्ष्यामि समासेन चतुर्वर्गप्रसिद्धये॥ ६॥
"The deity Bhairava is celebrated as the remover of obstacles.
I will briefly tell you for the attainment of the four goals of life (Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha)."
प्रणवः कामदं विद्या लज्जाबीजं च सिद्धिदम्।
बटुकायेति विज्ञेयं महापातकनाशनम्॥ ७॥
"The sacred syllable (Pranava) grants desires, the knowledge is fruitful, and the Lajja Bija grants success.
The name Batuka is known to destroy great sins."
**आपदुद्धारणायेति त्वापदुद्धारणं नृणाम्।**
**कुरुद्वयं महेशानि मोहने परिकीर्तितम्॥ ८॥**
"The phrase 'Apaduddharanaya' means the removal of obstacles for men.
The two words 'Kuru' and 'Dwayam' are celebrated for enchantment."
**बटुकाय महेशानि स्तम्भने परिकीर्तितम्।**
**लज्जाबीजं तथा विद्यान्मुक्तिदं परिकीर्तितम्॥ ९॥**
"The name Batuka, O Maheshani, is celebrated for stilling (obstacles).
Similarly, the Lajja Bija grants liberation."
**द्वाविंशत्यक्षरो मन्त्रः क्रमेण जगदीश्वरि।**
"The twenty-two-letter mantra, O Mistress of the World, is as follows:"

॥ ॐ ह्रीं बटुकाय आपदुद्धारणाय कुरु कुरु बटुकाय ह्रीम् ॥
Translation: "Om, empower Batukaya to rescue from calamity, Batukaya, bring success, Hreem."
अथ पाठः ।
Now the recitation:
ॐ पातु नित्यं शिरसि पातु ह्रीं कण्ठदेशके ॥ १०॥
May he protect my head always, and may Hreem protect my throat.
बटुकाय पातु नाभौ चापदुद्धारणाय च ॥
May Batukaya protect my navel and rescue me from all perils.
कुरुद्वयं लिङ्गमूले त्वाधारे वटुकाय च ॥ ११॥
May he establish the two sets of limbs at the base (of the body), and may Batukaya sustain them.
सर्वदा पातु ह्रीं बीजं बाह्वोर्युगलमेव च ॥
May Hreem protect me always, the seed and the pair of arms.
षडङ्गसहितो देवो नित्यं रक्षतु भैरवः ॥ १२॥
May Bhairava, together with the six limbs, always protect me.
ॐ ह्रीं बटुकाय सततं सर्वाङ्गं मम सर्वदा ॥
Om, may Batukaya always protect all my limbs.
ॐ ह्रीं पादौ महाकालः पातु वीरासनो हृदि ॥ १३॥
Om, may Mahakala protect my feet, and Veerasana (the thunderbolt posture) in the heart.
ॐ ह्रीं कालः शिरः पातु कण्ठदेशे तु भैरवः ।
Om, may Bhairava protect the head, and Gana (Shiva’s attendant) in the throat along with the eight Shaktis.
ॐ ह्रीं दण्डपाणिर्गुह्यमूले भैरवीसहितस्तथा ।
Om, may the one holding the staff protect the secret root, along with Bhairavi.
ॐ ह्रीं विश्वनाथः सदा पातु सर्वाङ्गं मम सर्वदः ॥ १५॥
Om, may Vishwanatha always protect all my limbs.
ॐ ह्रीं अन्नपूर्णा सदा पातु चांसौ रक्षतु चण्डिका ।
Om, may Annapurna always protect my mouth, and Chandika (the fierce goddess) guard my cheeks.
ॐ ह्रीं चण्डभैरवः पातु वक्त्रं कण्ठं श्रीक्रोधभैरवः ।
Om, may Chandabhairava protect my speech, and Shrikrodhabhairava (the angry Shiva) guard my throat.
ॐ ह्रीं नाभिदेशे कपाली च लिङ्गे भीषणभैरवः ।
Om, may Bhishanabhairava (the terrifying Shiva) protect my navel, Kapali (the skull-bearing Shiva) and Bhishana at the genitals.
ॐ ह्रीं बाहुयुग्मं सदा पातु भैरवो मम केवलम् ।
Om, may Bhairava always protect my arms, I am devoted to him alone.
ॐ ह्रीं प्राणापानौ समानं च उदानं व्यानमेव च ।
Om, may Pranapana, Samana, Udana, and Vyana protect me.
ॐ ह्रीं प्रणवं पातु सर्वाङ्गं लज्जाबीजं महाभये ।
Om, may Pranava protect all my limbs, the seed of embarrassment in the great fear.
इति श्रीब्रह्मकवचं भैरवस्य प्रकीर्तितम् ॥ २१॥
Thus ends the Brahmakavacham of Bhairava as praised.
चतुवर्गप्रदं नित्यं स्वयं देवप्रकाशितम् । (चतुवर्गफलप्रदं)
It bestows the four-fold goals, revealed by the divine itself.
यः पठेच्छृणुयान्नित्यं धारयेत्कवचोत्तमम् ॥ २२॥
Whoever recites or hears this daily, holding this best of armor.
सदानन्दमयो भूत्वा लभते परमं पदम् ।
Becoming ever-blissful, attains the supreme state.
